Disclaimer & Affiliate Disclosure
Educational decision-support only: what this site is, what it is not, why we do not quote prices or recommend specific brands, and how affiliate booking links work.
What this site is
Drive Before Buy is an independent educational decision-support website for car shoppers. The framework is built around a single idea: rent a similar vehicle for a weekend before buying, to test whether the platform and category fit your real life. The core artifact is the Weekend Test Drive Checklist, supported by category pages and a cost-vs-remorse calculator.
The site is owned and operated as an editorial project. It is not owned by, controlled by, or affiliated with any car manufacturer, dealership, rental company, insurance provider, or financial institution, other than the affiliate relationship described below.
The content is for general educational and informational purposes only. It is not individualized buying advice, legal advice, financial advice, tax advice, insurance advice, or mechanical advice. It is meant to help you ask better questions before you rent, inspect, finance, lease, or buy a vehicle.
What this site is not
- Not professional advice. Nothing on this site is legal, financial, tax, insurance, mechanical, or medical advice. We are not lawyers, financial advisors, tax professionals, mechanics, or doctors. We do not know your specific situation.
- Not a car dealer or broker. We do not sell cars. We do not represent dealers. We do not negotiate on your behalf. We do not receive commissions from car sales.
- Not a rental company. We do not rent vehicles. We do not control rental inventory, pricing, or vehicle assignment. We link to third-party rental comparison platforms; the rental itself is between you and the rental company.
- Not a review site. We do not claim to have hands-on tested specific year/trim combinations. We do not publish "best overall" rankings. We do not pretend to be Edmunds, Consumer Reports, or any other publication that does long-term vehicle testing.
- Not a substitute for an independent inspection. For used and CPO purchases, an independent pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is essential. See the used/CPO page. The rental test does not replace the inspection.
- Not a substitute for professional buying advice. If your situation involves tax questions (especially around EV tax credits), financing, lease termination, or insurance, talk to a qualified professional. We do not give that advice.
Editorial independence
The editorial content on this site — the checklist, the category pages, the cost-vs-remorse calculator, and the methodology page — is written to stand on its own. Rental platforms, manufacturers, dealers, lenders, and insurers do not review or approve our editorial content before publication, do not select the topics we cover, and do not see drafts.
Affiliate links are marked at the point where they appear. Affiliate compensation does not change our checklist, category guidance, calculator, or methodology.
Affiliate disclosure
This site uses an affiliate link to Discover Cars, a third-party rental comparison platform. If you click a marked Discover Cars link and book a rental, the site may earn a commission at no additional cost to you.
The site does not control rental prices, availability, vehicle assignment, insurance terms, cancellation policies, or customer support. Your rental contract is with the rental company or booking platform, not with this site.
What we do not claim
- No vehicle, brand, or model recommendations. We do not claim any vehicle, brand, or model is "best overall," "top-rated," or any similar superlative. There is no best car category — there is only the category that fits your life.
- We do not claim to have hands-on tested specific vehicles. The weekend rental framework is a method for you to test platforms yourself; it is not our claim to have tested them.
- No specific prices or price promises. We do not quote specific rental rates, vehicle prices, trade-in values, insurance costs, financing terms, tax credits, or depreciation percentages as universal facts. Numbers vary by region, season, dealer, lender, insurer, vehicle condition, and deal. Use current quotes from the company or professional responsible for the number.
- We do not guarantee any outcome from following the framework. A weekend rental can reveal a category does not fit your life; it cannot guarantee a category will fit your life. Long-term reliability, depreciation, and total cost of ownership are separate questions that require separate research.
- No professional advice. We do not provide tax, legal, financial, insurance, or mechanical advice. Specific questions in those domains require a qualified professional.
- No endorsements. We do not endorse any specific car manufacturer, dealer, rental company, insurance provider, lender, warranty product, or financial product.
Limitation of liability
The content on this site is provided for general educational, informational, and decision-support purposes only. It is not a substitute for professional advice specific to your situation. You are responsible for your own purchasing decisions, including the decision to rent a vehicle, the decision to buy a vehicle, and the decision to rely on any information you found here.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any damages — direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, or otherwise — arising from your use of, or reliance on, the content on this site. This includes any damages arising from a rental experience, a vehicle purchase, or a decision not to rent or not to purchase. If a rental or a purchase goes wrong, your recourse is against the rental company, the seller, the manufacturer, or your insurer — not against us.
If you are uncomfortable with this limitation, do not rely on this site for your decision. Use professional services appropriate to your situation.
